The Benefits of Gaming: Why Video Games Aren’t All Bad

Video games and gamers often face negative stereotypes, but it’s essential to recognize that gaming isn’t inherently negative. While excessive gaming can lead to addiction and have detrimental effects, research has shown that there are also potential benefits to playing video games. Over the past 50 years, studies have explored the effects of gaming on our brains, highlighting some surprising advantages. Here are a few potential benefits of gaming, according to research.

Increasing Cognitive Skills

A research review published in American Psychologist in 2013 by Isabela Granic, Adam Lobel, and Rutger C. M. E. Engels at Radboud University in the Netherlands, revealed that playing video games, particularly shooters, can improve spatial skills. The study found that the spatial skills enhancements from playing shooter games are comparable to those from formal educational courses aimed at enhancing the same skills.

Furthermore, video games can sharpen problem-solving skills. Playing games often involves encountering and solving various problems, which can enhance creative capacities in children, according to researchers. In fact, some games like Portal 2 have been found to improve cognitive skills more than educational apps.

Learning to Embrace Failure

Research indicates that video games can teach players to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. The American Psychologist research review suggests that being immersed in gaming environments can teach players the value of persistence in the face of failure. Gamers often respond to failure with excitement, interest, and joy, which can lead to psychological benefits.

A 2013 study conducted at Florida State University found that self-reported gamers were more willing to spend time on challenging puzzles compared to non-gamers. Learning to respond to failure as a challenge can have numerous benefits in various aspects of life.

Mental Well-being

During the COVID-19 pandemic, video game consoles like the Nintendo Switch were in high demand, leading to a study on the mental health benefits of gaming. A paper published in Natural Human Behavior based on survey responses from nearly 100,000 participants showed that owning a console had demonstrable mental health benefits.

While some studies have shown mixed results regarding the impact of gaming on mental well-being, it’s evident that the kind of game being played and the social aspect of gaming can influence the outcomes. Playing relaxing games or engaging in online gaming with friends can have positive social benefits.

Overall, while it’s essential not to neglect other aspects of life in favor of gaming, research suggests that gaming can have some positive effects on cognitive skills, problem-solving abilities, and mental well-being. It’s crucial to find a balance and enjoy gaming responsibly to reap the potential benefits without experiencing the negative consequences associated with excessive screen time. Symptoms of Social Media Disorder generally had stronger associations with psychosomatic symptoms compared to symptoms of Internet Gaming Disorder. This finding sheds light on the negative impact of excessive social media use on mental and physical health.

Research has shown that individuals who exhibit symptoms of Social Media Disorder, such as compulsive use, withdrawal symptoms, and negative consequences, are more likely to experience psychosomatic symptoms. These symptoms include headaches, stomachaches, fatigue, and muscle tension, which can significantly impact an individual’s overall well-being.

In contrast, symptoms of Internet Gaming Disorder, such as preoccupation with gaming, withdrawal symptoms, and unsuccessful attempts to control gaming habits, were not as strongly associated with psychosomatic symptoms. This suggests that while excessive gaming can have its own set of negative consequences, the effects on physical health may not be as pronounced as those of social media addiction.

It is important to recognize the potential dangers of excessive social media use and take steps to address any problematic behaviors. This may involve setting limits on screen time, seeking support from friends and family, or seeking professional help if necessary. By being mindful of our digital habits and prioritizing our mental and physical well-being, we can mitigate the negative effects of Social Media Disorder and lead healthier, more balanced lives.
