What did Republicans actually gain from their shutdown strategy? It appears their “victory” was merely an increase in health insurance premiums for millions and the removal of coverage for approximately 4 million Americans.
In contrast, Democrats have the opportunity to relentlessly criticize Republicans over healthcare issues while actively seeking to restore subsidies throughout the year.
A faction of Senate Republicans, dissatisfied with the cuts to healthcare subsidies, have initiated discussions with Democrats about possible legislation aimed at reinstating them.
The real challenge, however, lies within the House of Representatives. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and House Democrats are already strategizing ways to compel a vote regarding ACA subsidies.
