Polka dots have made a major comeback in the fashion world, popping up on runways and in street style looks everywhere. From Miu Miu’s fall 2023 show to Jacquemus and Acne Studios’ spring summer 2025 collections, the polka dot trend shows no signs of slowing down. This classic print has a fascinating history, with origins dating back to Medieval times when dots were seen as a bad omen for disease.

In the mid-19th century, polka dots became popular in the western world, coinciding with the industrial revolution and the rise of more intricate pattern-making techniques. The term “polka dot” was first used in a women’s lifestyle magazine in 1857, describing a muslin scarf embroidered with round polka dots. Over the years, polka dots have become a symbol of femininity and youth, seen on icons like Minnie Mouse, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn.

Today, designers like Sandy Liang continue to reinvent the polka dot, offering fresh takes on this timeless print. However, the ubiquity of polka dots in fashion and social media can lead to trend fatigue for those who have long embraced the print as part of their personal style. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of trend-driven content online, making it challenging to stay true to your individual aesthetic.

As someone who has always loved polka dots, I find myself grappling with this dilemma. While I adore my collection of polka dot pieces, I can’t help but wonder if the current saturation of the trend will diminish my appreciation for it. Navigating the ever-changing landscape of fashion trends can be tricky, but it’s important to remember that personal style should always take precedence over fleeting fads.

In a world where trends come and go at lightning speed, staying true to your unique style is more important than ever. So whether you’re a die-hard polka dot fan or simply appreciate the occasional dotty accessory, don’t let the trend cycle dictate your sartorial choices. Embrace what you love, whether it’s polka dots or any other print that speaks to your individuality.
