SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers from “Libertá,” the finale of “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox,” now streaming on Hulu.

“The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox” concludes Amanda Knox’s tumultuous journey with a surprising reunion between Knox (Grace Van Patten) and her former prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini (Francesco Acquaroli).

This gripping eight-episode series recounts the real-life story of Amanda Knox, the American student wrongfully convicted of murdering her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, during her time studying in Italy in 2007. The series revisits the events through Knox’s eyes, highlighting the injustices she faced throughout her 20s and into her present life.

Although Knox was eventually acquitted by the Italian courts, her saga continues to unfold, culminating in her unexpected meeting with Mignini—an encounter that frames the entire narrative, starting from Episode 1.

This reunion may astonish those unaware of Knox’s real-life developments. In her recent memoir, “Free: My Search For Meaning,” Knox revealed that she has formed a friendship with Mignini and even revisited Perugia, Italy, to meet him face-to-face.

The finale leaps ahead to a wiser Amanda in her 30s—now a mother and wife—who still grapples with her past, especially regarding her prosecutor. In search of understanding why Mignini believed she was guilty, she initiates communication with him.

Their correspondence entails exchanging letters, ultimately culminating in Knox’s brave decision to return to Italy to confront him. In an emotionally charged exchange, Knox presses Mignini for clarity about his role in her wrongful imprisonment, resulting in tears and a surprising act of forgiveness from her, despite his lack of an apology.

Below, Grace Van Patten shares insights with Variety about the riveting finale, her collaboration with Knox, and her experiences on set, as well as a glimpse into “Tell Me Lies” Season 3.

The moment Amanda reunited with her prosecutor was gripping, especially for those unaware of her story. Since Knox co-wrote the episode, what discussions did you have with her regarding the portrayal of that scene?

Amanda shared that this encounter represented a pivotal turning point where she seized control of her life—something she had previously been denied. I hope viewers gain a deeper understanding of her journey through this scene. Amanda’s input was crucial for capturing the specifics and emotions accurately. This aspect of the story offers new insights for the audience, diverging from widely-known details about her case.

Filming the confrontation with Giuliano was intense. How did you feel emotionally while performing that scene?

I felt a mix of fear and eagerness to convey Amanda’s experience. The pressure to learn Italian compounded the emotional demands of the scene. Fortunately, Francesco Acquaroli, who portrayed Giuliano, was incredibly compelling, which made the process flow naturally. We shot the scene over a couple of days, aware of its significance, and I felt relieved and grateful to have done it justice for Amanda.

What was the atmosphere on set during that crucial scene?

Amanda was present on set, which initially felt daunting. However, her warmth and availability to answer questions made me feel secure and supported. It was an emotionally charged experience, as we were recreating one of the most transformative moments of her life in front of her.

You had to learn Italian for this role, but the dialogue between Amanda and Giuliano shifts between languages. What drove this creative decision?

That aspect was heavily discussed regarding how language could be an artistic tool. Originally, the entire dialogue was in Italian, which was quite daunting. Ultimately, we transitioned between Italian and English, adding depth to Giuliano’s vulnerability. This choice not only enhanced the storytelling but also made the scene more accessible emotionally.

Was it challenging to switch between languages during filming?

Absolutely, it required significant preparation. I practiced Italian every evening to become comfortable with the language, enabling me to improvise and respond naturally to my co-actors’ lines. The commitment to daily language study was unlike any experience I’ve had for a role.

What were your discussions with Amanda like regarding the emotional depth tied to her desire for this reunion with Giuliano?

One key conversation revolved around differentiating Amanda across various stages of her life—before the tragedy, during her time in prison, and as she transitioned back to normalcy. Understanding these phases helped me portray her character’s evolution and emotional complexity on screen.

Amanda’s compassion for Giuliano, even as he hesitates to acknowledge the truth, is profound. Did that surprise you when you read the script?

I found Amanda’s capacity for compassion to be incredibly inspiring. Her willingness to forgive those connected to her trauma speaks volumes about her character. It highlights her resilience and ability to move beyond resentment, ultimately allowing her to build a fulfilling life. The scene illustrates Amanda’s hope for understanding, emphasizing that closure can derive from empathy rather than validation.

Amanda’s return to Italy while hiding under a blanket foreshadows earlier events. What was your take on her decision to risk it all?

I appreciate that she found closure through that courageous return. While it involved risk, the outcome was positive, providing Amanda with the resolution she sought. Filming that scene was crucial, setting the tone for the series’ underlying tensions.

Lastly, the confessional box scene leaves the door open for continuation. What are your thoughts on that?

I adore that ending. It deviates from conventional resolutions, provoking thought rather than providing closure. The ambiguity it creates is chilling, contributing to the narrative’s depth. I’ve yet to hear discussions about a sequel; the story effectively concludes through Amanda’s reclamation of her narrative.

Shifting focus: “Tell Me Lies” Season 3 has concluded filming. What can you share about Lucy’s ongoing journey?

It doesn’t head in a positive direction. Over two seasons, we’ve seen her make questionable choices, and Season 3 will unravel the complex entanglements she’s created.

What excites you about this season compared to previous ones?

This season delves deeper into character development, allowing audiences to engage with relationships and traits of characters that haven’t been explored thoroughly before.
