The Urgent Echoes of ‘The Ford/Hill Project’

The year was 2018, and I found myself on the floor of an airport, surrounded by a group of college-aged women studying abroad. We were huddled around a laptop screen, trying to make sense of what was happening back home. The tinny, warbled sound from the speakers filled the air as we listened intently to the news. “What was it Kavanaugh said? ‘I liked beer’?” someone muttered.

As we watched the events unfold, I couldn’t help but think back to my time at Oktoberfest, where we had indulged in stein after stein of beer. The memories of those carefree days clashed with the seriousness of the situation playing out on the screen. It was a stark reminder of the world we lived in, where power and privilege often overshadowed justice and truth.

Fast forward to 2021, and the echoes of past injustices still ring loud and clear. Elizabeth Marvel, a talented stage and television actor, is set to star in a live performance of Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford’s testimonies at La MaMa in New York. The Ford/Hill Project will bring to life the powerful words spoken during the Senate confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh.

Marvel’s deep connection to these events stems from her own journey as a feminist. The hearings in 1991 spurred her into action, igniting a fire within her to fight for equality and justice. As she delves into the transcripts of both testimonies, she sees a disturbing pattern emerge. The same faces, the same rhetoric, the same dismissal of women’s voices.

The pandemic brought Marvel to a crossroads in her career, prompting her to reflect on her legacy. As she enters “the youth of her old age,” she grapples with what it means to be an American. Taking long walks and pondering the state of the nation, she contemplates the role she wants to play in shaping the future.

In a world where political theatrics often overshadow truth and justice, Marvel’s work serves as a poignant reminder of the power of storytelling. Through her performance in The Ford/Hill Project, she aims to shed light on the enduring struggles faced by women in the quest for equality and respect.

As I reflect on Marvel’s journey and the powerful stories she brings to life, I am reminded of the importance of standing up for what is right. In a world filled with noise and distraction, it is artists like Marvel who remind us of the power of speaking truth to power. And as her performance takes center stage, I am hopeful that her message will resonate far and wide, sparking a new wave of change and progress.
