Isiah Whitlock Jr., the talented actor renowned for his portrayal of the corrupt state senator Clay Davis on the iconic TV series “The Wire,” passed away on Tuesday in New York at the age of 71, as confirmed by Variety.

His manager, Brian Liebman, took to Instagram to announce the heartbreaking news, describing Whitlock as not only a brilliant actor but also a remarkable human being who was loved by all who knew him. His passing has left a void in the hearts of many, and his memory will forever be cherished.

Hailing from Indiana, Whitlock was a versatile character actor who frequently collaborated with acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee. He appeared in several of Lee’s films, including “BlacKkKlansman,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “She Hate Me,” “25th Hour,” “Red Hook Summer,” and “Chi-Raq.”

One of Whitlock’s most memorable contributions to pop culture is his catchphrase “sheeeeee-it,” which he popularized in films like “She Hate Me” and “25th Hour,” and later became a recurring element in “The Wire.” Fans often approached him on the street, requesting him to deliver the iconic line. In a meta twist, Whitlock portrayed a character obsessed with “The Wire” in the comedy film “Cedar Rapids.”

In addition to his work with Spike Lee, Whitlock’s impressive filmography includes roles in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas,” “Chappelle’s Show,” “Pieces of April,” “Enchanted,” Pixar’s “Cars 3” and “Lightyear,” as well as an upcoming voice role in Pixar’s animated sci-fi comedy “Hoppers,” set to release in 2026.

On the small screen, Whitlock captivated audiences with his portrayal of George Maddox, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, in Seasons 2 through 4 of the hit series “Veep.” His character’s memorable interactions with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer provided a perfect showcase for Whitlock’s acting prowess.
