Actor James Ransone, famous for his role as Ziggy Sobotka on HBO’s The Wire, tragically passed away at the age of 46 in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Ransone died by suicide on December 19, with the cause of death listed as “hanging” in a shed.
Ransone, a married father of two, left behind his wife, Jamie McPhee, who shared a fundraiser for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in his memory. His portrayal of Ziggy Sobotka in The Wire’s second season in 2003 was a standout role that showcased his talent.
In addition to his work on The Wire, Ransone appeared in various television dramas such as Generation Kill, Treme, and Bosch. His final television appearance was in an episode of Poker Face earlier this year. Ransone also had an impressive filmography, with roles in movies like Prom Night, Sinister, It Chapter Two, and The Black Phone series.
In 2021, Ransone bravely spoke out about being a survivor of sexual abuse, accusing his former tutor of abusing him in 1992. The trauma from the abuse led to years of struggle with addiction, but Ransone ultimately got sober in 2006. In a 2016 Interview Magazine profile, he opened up about his journey to sobriety, emphasizing the importance of confronting his past.
