When you stand beneath the towering trees of a forest and gaze upward, it’s easy to be captivated by their swaying trunks and graceful canopies that provide shade below. Now, imagine being an ant or a beetle looking up at the stems of wildflowers like geraniums, garlic, or buttercups, experiencing a similar wonder. For photographer Theo Bosboom, this perspective from the ground up inspired a series that captures flowers as if they were majestic groves of ancient sequoias.
Exploring the landscapes near his home in the Netherlands and occasionally crossing into Germany or Belgium, Bosboom visits forests, dunes, parks, roadside verges, and any place where flowers flourish. During these journeys, he became concerned about the noticeable absence of pollinators among the blooms. βAt times, it was eerily quiet,β he reflects in the preface of his book, Flowerscapes, A Bugβs Eye View. βThis aligns with recent studies indicating a significant decline in the numbers of flowers and insects across Western Europe over recent decades.β

The steep decline in insect populations is a global issue, not limited to Europe. Human activities such as agriculture, pesticide use, urban development, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change significantly contribute to this decrease.
Despite these challenges, Bosboom remains optimistic. He notes the Netherlands’ shift towards more eco-friendly road management and increasing public awareness of the critical role native plants and wildflowers play in sustaining insect populations and entire ecosystems.
The diversity and resilience of flowers deeply resonate with Bosboom, who says, βThe endlessly surprising perspectives completely captivated me, and I found myself constantly marvelling at their beauty, elegance, and strength.β He committed to reducing his environmental footprint by focusing on local destinations, reachable on foot, by bike, or via short drives.
