The art scene in the region is truly vibrant, offering a diverse range of creative spaces and talents to explore. One such gem is Zaventem Ateliers, located just 30 minutes away in the village of Zaventem. This former industrial wasteland and paper factory has been transformed into a bustling community hub that houses 26 independent artists, designers, and scenographers in its workshop spaces. Among them is Adeline Halot, a Belgian artist and designer known for her exquisite tapestries made from a unique combination of flax linen and stainless steel wire. Another standout at Zaventem Ateliers is ATELIER185, where Clem Vanhee practices the almost lost art of Damascus steel forging and knife-making. And don’t miss KRJST Studio, known for their sumptuously colored woven textiles.

Venturing back into Brussels, a visit to the Saint-Josse-ten-Noode neighborhood is a must. Here, you can explore Espace Aygo, a once-derelict 19th-century building that has been transformed into a stunning working and living artists’ space by a five-person collective. The space is filled with salvaged materials and everyday objects that have been upcycled and repurposed to create a surreal and inspiring environment. Each room has its own unique character, from grotto-like bookshelves to a pink cloud bed with a fuzzy ceiling fresco. It’s a space that truly embodies creativity and encourages boundless imagination.

For those looking for a more traditional gallery experience, Brussels offers a variety of options that showcase both homegrown and international talent. Xavier Hufkens, with its three locations in the city, is a must-visit. The gallery’s Van Eyck outpost recently featured an exhibition by Nathanaëlle Herbelin, showcasing intimate paintings that explore themes of grief and connection. Objects With Narratives, a once-roving Belgian gallery, has found a permanent home in the historic Place du Grand Sablon, showcasing richly textured metal works and sculptural furniture in a Baroque ballroom setting.

And for those interested in design and craftsmanship, Collectible is an annual fair that highlights 21st-century design and emerging craftspeople. The Fashion & Lace Museum is also worth a visit, with an ongoing exhibition about Stijl, a local boutique that has been championing contemporary Belgian fashion for over four decades. With so much creativity and innovation to explore, Brussels is truly a haven for art lovers and design enthusiasts alike.
