Architects of AI Named Time’s Person of the Year for 2025

NEW YORK (AP) — Time magazine’s annual person of the year selection for 2025 features a group of individuals known as the “Architects of AI,” depicted on the cover in a homage to the iconic “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” photograph from the 1930s.

Time editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs explained the choice by stating, “This was the year when artificial intelligence’s full potential roared into view, and when it became clear that there will be no turning back or opting out.”

The Visionaries Behind AI

The magazine intentionally highlighted the people behind the technology, rather than the technology itself. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key individuals featured in the magazine’s rendition of the famous photograph:

1. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg has been leading Meta’s AI efforts, making significant investments in AI data companies and focusing on developing “superintelligence” technologies. This shift comes after Meta’s previous focus on the metaverse and virtual reality.

2. AMD CEO Lisa Su

Under Su’s leadership, AMD has seen remarkable growth and innovation in AI chip development, competing with industry giants like Nvidia. The company’s partnerships and advancements in AI technology have positioned it as a key player in the AI landscape.

3. xAI CEO Elon Musk

Musk’s AI company, xAI, is behind the development of the Grok AI chatbot, which aims to outperform competitors in terms of reasoning and functionality. Musk’s unconventional approach to AI has garnered attention and controversy in the tech industry.

5. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has revolutionized generative AI technology, attracting a large user base and commercial success. Altman’s focus on AI development and competition in the market has positioned OpenAI as a key player in the AI landscape.

6. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis

DeepMind’s AI research has led to breakthroughs in protein folding prediction and AI technology. Google’s integration of DeepMind’s Gemini platform has enhanced the search experience and expanded AI capabilities for users worldwide.

7. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei

Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, competes with industry leaders in providing AI solutions for businesses. The company’s focus on AI development and market appeal has positioned it as a valuable player in the AI industry.
