A tragic and horrifying story has come to light as a burglar has been charged with the murder of a young stripper, Mercedes Vega. Vega was found beaten, shot, and burnt to death on the day she was set to testify against her alleged attacker in court for a previous robbery incident.
Cudjoe Young, 29, has been indicted on charges of murder, kidnapping, and arson in connection with Vega’s death. The 22-year-old exotic dancer from Phoenix was discovered in a torched car on the side of an Arizona highway in 2023. Vega had previously identified Young as the suspect in an armed robbery at her apartment building back in 2020, where she was held at gunpoint by a masked assailant.
Vega was scheduled to testify against Young in the robbery case on the day she was abducted from her apartment building’s garage. Her body was later found battered and burned in a Chevy Malibu on the side of the interstate. Police noted that bleach had been poured on her face and down her throat, indicating a brutal and calculated attack.
Two other strippers from the club where Vega worked were also victims of robberies by a suspect matching Young’s description. Young was charged with robbery in one of those cases and has pleaded not guilty. Another suspect, Sencere Hayes, was arrested on a first-degree murder charge related to Vega’s killing.
Young now faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, arson, theft, and armed robbery with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held without bond. Hayes, on the other hand, has been indicted on similar charges as Young, along with hindering prosecution, and is being held on a $4 million bond.
In a shocking turn of events, Young has decided to represent himself in his upcoming trial on the robbery charges, causing a delay in the proceedings. Additionally, a third suspect, Jared Gray, has also been charged with murder in connection to Vega’s death and is awaiting extradition to Arizona from Georgia, where he is currently held on unrelated charges.
