Unlikely Turn of Events: Car Thief Discovers Kilo of Cocaine in Trunk

In a bizarre twist of events in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a car thief got more than he bargained for when he attempted to steal a Kia parked in a commuter lot in Hyannis on Jan. 6. Instead of finding valuables, the thief stumbled upon a kilo of cocaine in the trunk, which led to a chain of events that ultimately resulted in the arrest of a drug dealer by the police.

Edward Gillespie, 62, was arrested for trafficking coke from Hyannis to Nantucket, cops said. facebook/barnstablepolice

The thief, whose identity remains undisclosed, initially attempted to start the car by tampering with the steering column but was unsuccessful. Subsequently, he opened the trunk in search of valuables, only to discover the large package of cocaine, adorned with an image of Bugs Bunny eating a carrot. Fearing the repercussions of crossing paths with a drug dealer, the thief made an unusual decision to report the discovery to the police, as reported by The Boston Globe.

Initially, the thief misled the authorities by claiming to have found the cocaine on the side of the road. However, he later confessed to the true sequence of events. It remains unclear whether charges were filed against him.

Following the tip-off from the thief, law enforcement officers set up surveillance near the vehicle and apprehended Edward Gillespie, 62, on Jan. 8 for trafficking the drugs from Hyannis to Nantucket. A subsequent police statement revealed the seizure of 1,141 grams of cocaine, 68 grams of amphetamine pills, and approximately $10,000 in cash.
