Thieves Steal Almost Half a Million Dollars’ Worth of Lobster En Route to Costco Stores

These thieves are just shell-fish. A shipment of lobsters worth nearly $400,000 was stolen on its way to Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota. The succulent seafood was being transported from Massachusetts when it mysteriously disappeared.

The lobsters were picked up in Taunton, Mass., but never made it to their intended destination, according to the president of Rexing Companies, the Indiana-based freight company responsible for the transportation.

The thieves employed a new trick to make off with the valuable cargo. They posed as legitimate truckers using fake IDs and spoofed emails to deceive the logistics company, as reported by Dylan Rexing. This pattern of impersonation and hijacking of high-value freight in transit is becoming more common, he added.

According to Rexing, the loss of such a significant amount of lobster is a major blow to the company, leading to tough decisions and increased costs across the supply chain. Ultimately, consumers may end up bearing the brunt of these consequences through higher prices.

Expressing concern over the alarming trend of cargo theft, Rexing emphasized the need for modern enforcement tools to combat organized criminal networks. Without effective measures in place, these thefts will continue to disrupt businesses and impact everyday prices.
