Sunny Sethi, the founder of HEN Technologies, may not seem like someone who would revolutionize an industry that has remained largely unchanged for decades. However, his company’s innovative fire nozzles have proven to increase suppression rates by up to 300% while conserving 67% of water. Despite his modesty about this achievement, Sethi is more focused on the future than dwelling on past successes. And what lies ahead for HEN Technologies extends far beyond just fire nozzles.

Sethi’s journey to the firefighting industry was not a straightforward one. After earning his PhD at the University of Akron, where he focused on surfaces and adhesion, he founded ADAP Nanotech, a company that developed a carbon nanotube-based portfolio and secured grants from the Air Force Research Lab. He then moved on to SunPower, where he developed new materials and processes for photovoltaic modules. His career path eventually led him to TE Connectivity, where he worked on devices with new adhesive formulations for the automotive industry.

The turning point came when Sethi’s wife issued him a challenge. After experiencing a series of devastating wildfires in California, including the Thomas Fire, Camp Fire, and Napa-Sonoma fires, Sethi’s wife urged him to take action to improve firefighting capabilities. This led Sethi to found HEN Technologies in Hayward in June 2020. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Sethi conducted research on computational fluid dynamics to develop a nozzle that revolutionizes how water suppresses fires and interacts with wind.

While the fire nozzle is a significant achievement for HEN Technologies, Sethi has expanded the company’s offerings to include monitors, valves, overhead sprinklers, and pressure devices. Additionally, HEN is set to launch a flow-control device called “Stream IQ” and discharge control systems this year. These devices incorporate custom-designed circuit boards with sensors and computing power, enhancing their functionality and turning traditional hardware into smart, connected equipment.

One of the key innovations of HEN Technologies is the interconnected system created by these devices. By utilizing sensors at the pump to act as a virtual sensor in the nozzle, HEN’s platform tracks water usage, pressure requirements, and environmental conditions during firefighting operations. This data is crucial for optimizing resource allocation and preventing water shortages during fire emergencies.

To complement its hardware innovations, HEN has developed a cloud platform with application layers that provide real-time data and analytics for fire departments. This platform, akin to what Adobe has done with cloud infrastructure, offers individualized systems for fire captains, battalion chiefs, and incident commanders. With features like weather data and GPS tracking integrated into the devices, firefighters can receive timely alerts about changing conditions and optimize their response strategies.

The Department of Homeland Security has recognized the value of predictive analytics in emergency response through its NERIS program. HEN Technologies’ data-driven approach aligns with the program’s goals of enhancing operational efficiency and situational awareness during emergencies. While HEN is currently focused on implementing data nodes and building its data infrastructure, the company plans to commercialize its application layer with built-in intelligence in the near future.

Despite the challenges of navigating the B2C and B2B aspects of the firefighting market, Sethi is proud of HEN’s success in both areas. The company has achieved significant revenue growth since launching its products, with $5.2 million in revenue generated last year. As HEN continues to innovate and expand its offerings, it is poised to make a lasting impact on the firefighting industry with its cutting-edge technologies and data-driven solutions. HEN Technologies, a leading provider of fire department equipment, is on track to achieve $20 million in revenue this year, serving over 1,500 fire department customers. The company faces competition from industry giants like IDEX Corp and software companies such as Central Square and First Due. However, HEN’s CEO, Sethi, believes that they offer a unique value proposition that sets them apart from the competition.

One of the challenges HEN faces is scaling fast enough to meet the growing demand for their products and services. The company serves a diverse range of clients, including the Marine Corps, US Army bases, Naval atomic labs, NASA, and Abu Dhabi Civil Defense. With a network of 120 distributors and recently qualifying for GSA approval, HEN is well-positioned to expand its reach and increase its market share in the fire department equipment industry.

Fire departments across the country purchase approximately 20,000 new engines each year, creating a recurring revenue stream for HEN once they are qualified to supply these departments. Additionally, HEN’s hardware generates valuable data that can be used to provide insights and enhance fire suppression techniques, ensuring that revenue continues even between purchase cycles.

One of HEN’s key strengths lies in its team of experts, including former NASA engineers, veterans from top tech companies like Tesla, Apple, and Microsoft, and a software lead with experience in building cloud infrastructure for Adobe. This diverse and talented team enables HEN to deliver innovative solutions and stay ahead of the competition.

While HEN may be known for selling nozzles and other fire department equipment, the real value lies in the data they collect. This data provides valuable insights into how water behaves under pressure, how fire responds to suppression techniques, and other critical information that is essential for building AI systems and predictive physics engines. Investors have taken notice of HEN’s potential, with the company recently closing a $20 million Series A round and securing additional funding from Silicon Valley Bank.

Looking ahead, Sethi is already planning for the future and intends to continue fundraising in the second quarter of this year. With a strong team, innovative technology, and a growing customer base, HEN Technologies is well-positioned for continued success in the fire department equipment industry.
