Exciting news in the realm of weight loss: Costco customers can now access Ozempic and Wegovy, the branded injectable medications produced by Novo Nordisk, both containing semaglutide as the active ingredient.

On Friday, Novo Nordisk confirmed that both medications are available at Costco pharmacies across the country for $499 per month—a price match with CVS, Walmart, and their direct-to-consumer platform. A prescription is still required to purchase these medications.

“This partnership showcases Novo Nordisk’s commitment to GLP-1 therapies while emphasizing our focus on patient affordability and providing safe access to genuine, FDA-approved medications,” a spokesperson from Novo Nordisk shared with Fast Company.

Additionally, Costco is offering a 2% discount to executive members and holders of the Costco Citibank Visa card.

While both medications are similar, the FDA has approved them for different purposes. Wegovy is specifically sanctioned for long-term weight management, whereas Ozempic is approved for treating type 2 diabetes and reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications such as heart attack, stroke, and mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes and heart conditions. Ozempic is often prescribed off-label for weight loss.

The two medications differ in dosing and may produce varied side effects. Since Wegovy is given at higher dosages, with a limit of 2.4 milligrams weekly, it could facilitate more significant weight loss but also more pronounced gastrointestinal side effects. Generally, Ozempic is administered at 2 milligrams each week, and both are injected weekly.
