Hunter Woodhall, the reigning 400m men’s T 62 Paralympic champion, recently shared a harrowing experience with his fans. The American athlete revealed that he underwent emergency surgery for an enlarged appendix and credited a unique piece of equipment for potentially saving his life.
Woodhall, a five-time Paralympic and two-time World Championships medalist, is well-known for his achievements in track and field alongside his wife, Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall. The couple often shares glimpses of their everyday lives with fans on social media.
In a recent Instagram post, Woodhall spoke about how his Oura ring, a wearable health tracker, may have played a crucial role in detecting his medical emergency. He explained that while traveling to visit his father in Syracuse, Utah, he started experiencing severe stomach pain. Initially attributing it to lactose intolerance from a meal he had, the pain persisted and worsened the next day.
Upon checking his Oura ring, Woodhall noticed alarming changes in his resting heart rate, body temperature, and heart rate variability. Concerned by these unusual readings, he decided to seek medical help with his mother. After undergoing various tests at the hospital, doctors discovered that his appendix was dangerously enlarged and required immediate surgery to prevent it from bursting.
Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and Woodhall reassured his fans that he was recovering well and would be taking some time off to recuperate alongside his father.
Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Woodhall recently shared a glimpse of his training regimen on social media. The video showcased the athlete pushing himself through a rigorous on-track workout, signaling his determination to excel in the upcoming competitions.
In 2024, Woodhall had a stellar year, winning gold in the 400m men’s T 62 event and bronze in the 4x100m mixed relay at the Paralympic Games in Paris. With a total of five Olympic medals to his name, including one gold, one silver, and three bronze, Woodhall is a formidable force in the world of para-athletics.
