Improving Cognitive Health, Happiness, and Longevity: Three Recent Studies

In today’s world of constant exposure to negative news and stressful events, it can be challenging to maintain a positive outlook. However, recent research offers promising suggestions on ways to enhance cognitive health, happiness, and longevity. While the studies are still in the preliminary stages, they provide actionable steps that anyone can take at home without significant cost.

1) Listen to More Music

A recent study conducted by Monash University researchers found that regular music listening was linked to a 39% reduced risk of dementia in individuals over the age of 70. Additionally, playing a musical instrument was associated with a 35% decreased risk of dementia. Interestingly, engaging in both activities simultaneously resulted in a 33% lower risk of dementia. The study, which included over 10,000 participants, highlights the potential cognitive benefits of incorporating music into daily life.

2) Learn Another Language

Research involving more than 80,000 individuals across 27 European countries revealed that monolingual individuals were twice as likely to experience accelerated aging compared to multilingual individuals. The study indicated that the cognitive demands of speaking multiple languages contribute to building cognitive resilience over time. The more languages a person speaks, the greater the protective effect on cognitive health.

3) Foster an Optimistic Outlook

A study involving 70,000 participants found that optimism was associated with an 11 to 15% longer lifespan, as well as increased odds of achieving ‘exceptional longevity’ (living to age 85 or beyond). This positive outlook remained significant even after accounting for various factors such as baseline physical health and marital status. Cultivating optimism can have profound effects on overall well-being and longevity.

While these studies establish correlations rather than causation, they offer valuable insights into potential strategies for enhancing cognitive health, happiness, and longevity. Implementing these recommendations does not require significant financial investment:

  • Listening to music can be easily achieved through local radio stations or resources available at public libraries.
  • Learning a new language can be pursued through community college classes, community education centers, or online platforms offering free language lessons.
  • Developing an optimistic outlook involves consciously choosing to consume positive and uplifting content rather than engaging in negative news consumption.

By dedicating time and effort to activities like listening to music, learning new languages, and fostering optimism, individuals can potentially reduce the risk of dementia, improve mental well-being, and lead longer, happier lives. Investing in these holistic approaches to health and happiness can yield significant benefits in the long run.
