In a bold new exhibition, Raúl de Nieves amalgamates elements of Catholic iconography, Mexican folklore, and tarot symbolism into a mesmerizing installation titled “In Light of Innocence.” Hosted at Pioneer Works, the Main Hall has been transformed into a vibrant, otherworldly sanctuary. This immersive space is adorned with 50 stained glass-like panels that stretch upwards, all complemented by a larger lightbox mural that radiates warmth and light from below.

Known for his innovative use of everyday materials, De Nieves employs wood, glue, tape, and vibrant, translucent acetate in this project. This choice allows natural light to pour into the hall, creating an inviting atmosphere. By replacing traditional glass with colorful plastics, the artist reimagines a classic cathedral space, introducing whimsical and non-religious imagery alongside typographic elements. Among these, visitors can find a skeleton on horseback—an emblem of transformation found in tarot—and striking phrases like “happiness runs in circular motion” and “words are like weapons, they wound sometimes.”

This eclectic mix of spiritual motifs not only enhances the visual experience but also fosters a space for introspection and connection across diverse belief systems. A statement about the installation reflects, “‘In Light of Innocence’ invites viewers to see change not merely as a loss, but as a form of renewal—an opportunity for greater insight and resilience.”

The immersive exhibition marks De Nieves’ inaugural institutional showcase in New York City and will be on display until December 14. To explore more of the artist’s unique creations, visit his Instagram.
