TikTok Introduces New Digital Well-Being Features to Improve Mental Health
Popular social media platform TikTok has announced the rollout of new digital well-being features aimed at enhancing the mental health of its users. These features include an affirmation journal, a background sound generator, and badges for controlling TikTok usage.
The company is revamping its screen time management page to incorporate these new tools. Users will have access to an affirmation journal with over 120 positive prompts to help set intentions for the day, a sound generator offering calming sounds like rain or ocean waves, and a breathing exercise module. Additionally, the page will feature content from creators discussing strategies for limiting screen time, utilizing parental tools, and customizing feeds.
Recognizing the importance of promoting healthy digital habits, TikTok is introducing badges to reward users who demonstrate responsible usage, particularly teenagers. The company conducted research on digital well-being and found that overly strict tools can have adverse effects on teens.
To earn these badges, users must complete various missions such as adhering to sleep hours, utilizing meditation tools, and setting daily screen time limits. TikTok is also incentivizing users to view weekly screen time reports and invite others to participate in these missions.
During early testing, TikTok observed increased engagement with the new well-being screen, with the affirmation journal being a standout tool. The platform will prompt users to access these tools when using the app at night or exceeding daily screen time limits.
In addition to these features, TikTok recently introduced parental control tools allowing guardians to block specific accounts and receive notifications when teens share public content. This move aligns with the broader industry trend of tech companies enhancing safety measures for teenage users.
