The American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League recognized the show’s merits by awarding it five Tony Awards in 2022, including Best Musical, Best Leading Actress, and Best Featured Actress.

The story unfolds at the Skater Planet in Bergen County, N.J., a setting that mirrors the characters’ inner turmoil. Sixteen-year-old Kimberly Levaco (Carolee Carmello) navigates the challenges of adolescence with a maturity beyond her years, juxtaposed against the backdrop of her dysfunctional family and rare medical condition.

As Kimberly forms a bond with classmate Seth (Miguel Gil), their interactions reveal a delicate dance of friendship and romance amidst the backdrop of high school drama and personal struggles. The ensemble cast, including Grace Capeless, Darron Hayes, Skye Alyssa Friedman, and Pierce Wheeler, infuses the production with a contagious energy that captures the essence of “Kimberly Akimbo.”

Carolee Carmello delivers a captivating performance as Kimberly, embodying the character’s fears and desires with depth and authenticity. The dynamic between Kimberly and her parents, played by Dana Steingold and Jim Hogan, adds another layer of complexity to the narrative, exploring themes of family dynamics and personal growth.

“Kimberly Akimbo” masterfully weaves together themes of love, loss, and resilience, captivating audiences with its poignant storytelling and dynamic performances.
