Mads Mikkelsen, a 21-year-old Norwegian traveler, faced a harrowing experience at Newark Liberty International Airport when he was denied entry to the United States due to a series of bizarre events surrounding a meme on his phone. In an exclusive interview with Hyperallergic, Mikkelsen shared the details of his ordeal, shedding light on the questionable practices of immigration authorities.

Upon his arrival at the airport, Mikkelsen was singled out by plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who confiscated a cured sausage he had brought as a gift. Subsequently, he was subjected to a series of intrusive questions about terrorism, extremism, and drug smuggling. Reluctantly, Mikkelsen handed over his phone for inspection after being threatened with severe consequences for non-compliance.

To his shock, Mikkelsen was accused of possessing narcotic paraphernalia based on a wooden tobacco pipe he had crafted in trade school. Despite his attempts to clarify the misunderstanding, the officers remained adamant in their misguided belief. The situation escalated when a viral meme featuring Vice President JD Vance surfaced on Mikkelsen’s phone, leading to further scrutiny and allegations of illegal and dangerous content.

The interrogation took a distressing turn when Mikkelsen was subjected to a forceful strip search, followed by ridiculing remarks about items in his luggage, including a flower-printed shirt and a choker necklace. Ultimately, he was informed that his entry denial was attributed to a combination of perceived drug paraphernalia and extremist propaganda, referencing the JD Vance meme.

In response to the public outcry following Mikkelsen’s story, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) refuted the claims, asserting that his denial was based on drug use admissions rather than the meme incident. Despite this official stance, Mikkelsen maintains that the treatment he received was unjust and reflects poorly on the immigration system.

Currently back in Norway, Mikkelsen has chosen not to pursue legal action against the US authorities due to a lack of faith in the judicial system. He believes that his ordeal highlights the need for better treatment of travelers and raises concerns about potential biases in immigration enforcement. As a White, European, cisgender male, Mikkelsen acknowledges his privilege in the situation but remains committed to advocating for fair treatment for all individuals facing similar challenges.
