Los Angeles County in the US has been facing catastrophic wildfires for the last five days. The fires have resulted in the loss of 11 lives and the destruction of numerous structures, including homes, businesses, and vehicles. While the attention has been on the fires near Malibu, a similarly devastating fire in Eaton Canyon has ravaged Altadena, once a community of charming bungalows.

Residents of Altadena have found small treasures amidst the ashes, bringing moments of joy amid the tragedy. For example, six-year-old Henry Giles was ecstatic to discover a bucket and a toy lawnmower that survived the flames, as he had hidden them in anticipation of a fire. Another resident, Larry Villescas, found sentimental items like a Christmas ornament and a cherished dish set given to him on his wedding day 25 years ago.

Despite the widespread destruction, some residents managed to salvage meaningful items from the debris. Daron Anderson found a flowered vase that remained intact, intending to gift it to his mother. Another woman found two pearls from her mother’s necklace among charred coins, while her neighbor uncovered a power saw and an antique tool.

As the firefighters continue to battle the Eaton Fire, communities in Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre are reeling from the devastation, with over 7,000 structures damaged or destroyed. The estimated losses from the Los Angeles wildfires have already exceeded $135 billion and could potentially reach $150 billion, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in US history.

The resilience and spirit of the residents in the face of such adversity are truly inspiring, as they cherish the small treasures that survived the flames and hold onto hope for rebuilding their communities.
