Garnett, 66, was due to return from a tramp in the Baton/Ellis River area on December 30 but has not been accounted for. Described as approximately 177cm tall, weighing around 100kg, with grey hair, Garnett’s disappearance has prompted a search operation.
Sergeant Jonny Evans confirmed that police will be deploying radar technology in the search tomorrow and has urged the public to avoid the closed-off areas. The closed sections in the Baton Valley include Wilkinson Track, Baton Saddle, Loveridge Spur Route, Cowin Spur Track, Wharepapa Arthur Range (from Mount Star through to the twins), and the walking track to Flanagans Hut.
The search efforts will involve the use of Recco detecting equipment, with Sgt Evans appealing for anyone who was in the Baton/Ellis River area since the afternoon of December 26, especially around Flanagan’s Hut, to come forward with any information.
Meanwhile, authorities are also continuing the search for 20-year-old Connor Purvis, who went missing after setting out to climb Mt Huxley last week. The search for both individuals underscores the importance of safety measures and the need for cooperation from the public in such situations.
