BOSTON (AP) — Any Lucia Lopez Belloza found herself questioning why she was being deported as she sat on a flight heading to Texas. A college student with no criminal record, she had no inkling that she would be sent back to Honduras, her home country.

After being detained at Boston’s airport on Nov. 20, Lopez Belloza, a 19-year-old freshman at Babson College, was deported two days later, despite a Massachusetts judge’s order prohibiting her from leaving the U.S. Her sudden deportation left her in shock, confused, and numb.

Although the government has issued an apology for the mistake, Lopez Belloza’s future remains uncertain. Her lawyer is seeking a court order to compel the Trump administration to devise a plan to bring her back to the U.S.

Lopez Belloza and her mother faced deportation years after arriving in the U.S. Despite government claims that she missed appeal opportunities, Lopez Belloza was unaware of any removal order. The sudden separation from her family during the holidays has left her feeling depressed and anxious.
