Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Addresses Reports of Heated Clashes in Trump Administration

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed recent reports of heated arguments within President Donald Trump’s administration, attributing them to the normal push-and-pull of policymaking.
“Treasury secretaries dating back to Alexander Hamilton have a history of dueling,” Bessent quipped during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “I believe this time, I came out on top for the Treasury’s side.”
He added, “Similar to a great sports team, disagreements may arise within President Trump’s team, but we ultimately work together to serve the President and the American people.”
Bessent’s comments follow accounts of intense clashes between him and other Trump officials, such as Federal Housing Finance Agency chief Bill Pulte, regarding economic policy direction and influence within Trump’s circle.
Reports suggest that tensions escalated during meetings this summer, with Bessent confronting Pulte about negative remarks allegedly made to Trump, even going as far as threatening physical confrontation.
Internal conflicts were also evident at the White House, with a heated altercation between Bessent and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency, concerning the Internal Revenue Service.
An experienced hedge fund professional, Bessent assumed the role of Treasury Secretary in January and has been actively involved in trade negotiations for the administration. He expressed optimism on Tuesday about a potential trade deal with China before the upcoming November deadline.
