Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, faced widespread ridicule on social media for his response to a question about tariffs that many criticized as “circular logic.”

During an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Bessent was asked about President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on European nations with troops in Greenland, in light of Trump’s recent interest in acquiring the island. Moderator Kristen Welker questioned Bessent about the national emergency that would justify these new tariffs, referencing Trump’s past use of national emergencies to justify tariffs.

Bessent’s response was met with confusion as he stumbled to explain, stating, “The national emergency is avoiding a national emergency.”

Despite failing to provide a specific emergency, Bessent went on to defend the tariffs as a strategic and geopolitical decision, suggesting that Trump is leveraging America’s economic power to prevent future crises.
