Tropical Storm Chantal Strengthens as it Approaches Southeast US Coast
Tropical Storm Chantal has gained strength as it moves towards the southeast US coast, with heavy rains expected in parts of the Carolinas on Sunday.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued tropical storm warnings for portions of South Carolina and North Carolina. As of early Sunday, the storm was located about 75 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, and 85 miles southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina.
With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, the storm is moving north at 8 mph.
Rain bands from Chantal have started moving onshore, increasing the risk of flash floods, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm made landfall in South Carolina around 4 a.m. and is expected to weaken rapidly as it moves further inland.
Heavy rainfall is forecasted for parts of North Carolina through Monday, with total amounts ranging from 2 to 4 inches and localized areas receiving up to 6 inches, which could result in flash flooding.

The South Carolina Emergency Management division has cautioned residents about the potential for isolated tornadoes along the coast and minor coastal flooding. Drivers are advised not to drive on water-covered roads or around road-closure signs in flooded areas.
