Truecaller, a popular caller identity platform with over 450 million users worldwide, has recently introduced a groundbreaking new feature aimed at enhancing family protection. This innovative feature allows one person to become the admin of a family group, enabling them to receive alerts about potential fraud calls received by other members and even end suspicious calls on their behalf to prevent scams.
Initially launched in select countries such as Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya in December, Truecaller has now expanded this feature globally, including in its largest market, India. What sets this feature apart is that it is available for free to all users, regardless of whether they are on a paid Truecaller plan.
The designated admin of a family or friends group can monitor up to five members, receiving alerts for fraudulent calls they may receive. In cases where the admin suspects harm, they have the ability to remotely end the call, providing an added layer of protection for vulnerable members. While alerts for fraud calls are available for both iOS and Android users, the feature to end calls remotely is currently limited to Android devices.
Moreover, on Android devices, group members can grant the admin permission to track real-time activities such as walking or driving, battery level, and phone sound settings. This functionality is particularly useful for keeping tabs on elderly members and ensuring that calls are only made when they are not engaged in potentially distracting activities.
In addition to call monitoring and management, the admin can also block specific numbers and international calling codes, as well as share a blocklist with other group members. It’s important to note that the admin does not have access to the non-spam call history or SMS history of group members, ensuring privacy and confidentiality.
Looking ahead, Truecaller is exploring the integration of AI technology to further enhance family protection. This includes developing AI algorithms to detect and disconnect scam calls based on specific keywords associated with fraudulent activities. With the rise of scam calls in India leading to significant financial losses, Truecaller’s proactive approach to combating fraud is commendable.
Despite facing challenges such as declining stock value and profitability, Truecaller remains committed to delivering a superior product experience for its users. As regulatory initiatives like Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) are introduced in markets like India, Truecaller continues to differentiate itself by offering comprehensive caller information and community-based reports to combat spam calls effectively.
As Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala emphasized, the focus remains on providing valuable solutions to users, even in the face of evolving regulatory landscapes. By offering advanced features like family protection and leveraging AI technology to combat fraud, Truecaller continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing user safety and privacy in an increasingly digital world.
