The leadership uncertainty at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues as the Trump administration announced on Wednesday that it will not nominate a new director by the procedural deadline.
The administration had until Wednesday to propose a nominee for the acting CDC director role, which has been filled by interim leaders for nearly all of Trump’s second term. Susan Monarez was confirmed to the position in July but was dismissed in late August after challenging health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on vaccination policy.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services indicated that National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya will continue in a part-time leadership capacity at the CDC. However, he will not be able to undertake some director or acting director tasks, which are non-delegable according to legislation, and will need to be handled by Kennedy.
