The Trump administration has recently accused the University of Pennsylvania of providing incomplete and inaccurate financial disclosures regarding its foreign ties. In a letter sent to the university president, J. Larry Jameson, the Education Department demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. The administration claimed that the university had not been forthcoming in its reporting of foreign funding, as required by law.

According to officials, Penn had failed to accurately report foreign gifts and contracts worth $250,000 or more, with more than half of the disclosures being reported late. The government also noted that the university had misidentified many of the foreign sources without providing sufficient details. As a result, the Education Department has ordered Penn to produce a wide range of records within 30 days.

These records include copies of admissions agreements with foreign governments for international students, as well as documentation related to faculty and research collaborations over the past eight years. The government is also seeking the names and contact information of university personnel involved in creating, administering, or managing these agreements, as well as those involved in international research collaborations and exchange student visitor programs.

This investigation into Penn’s foreign funding is just one of several inquiries that the Education Department has recently launched into elite universities. Similar investigations have been initiated into Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley. Both Harvard and Berkley have stated that they are in full compliance with the law.

The Trump administration’s scrutiny of elite universities is seen as part of a broader effort to address what they perceive as a liberal bias in higher education. By holding universities accountable for their foreign ties and funding sources, the administration aims to ensure transparency and integrity in academic institutions. Penn has yet to comment on the allegations, but it is clear that the administration is taking these issues seriously.
