A seemingly intense confrontation captured outside the White House between President Trump and Melania was actually a lively exchange regarding a malfunctioning escalator at the UN headquarters, according to lip-reading experts.
The viral video shows Trump gesturing emphatically towards Melania, who reacts by shaking her head. This moment was filmed through the windows of Marine One as it landed on the South Lawn on Wednesday evening.
While many on social media speculated that it indicated a quarrel reminiscent of a recent incident with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, experts assert that the discussion was related to the escalator debacle that occurred the previous day at UN headquarters in Manhattan.
Forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman, who has served as an expert witness in UK legal cases, informed the Daily Mail, “From my observation, it seems Donald Trump wasn’t confronting Melania Trump, but rather expressing frustration about the happenings at the UN.”
Freeman indicates that Melania remarked that Trump “just continued” when the escalator unexpectedly stopped functioning while they were aboard.
He surmised that Trump retorted, “It was unbelievable. How could that happen?”
Melania then reportedly urged him, “Donald, look at me,” just before they disembarked from the helicopter and strolled hand in hand across the lawn.
Trump had previously called for investigations after the escalator at the United Nations abruptly halted as he and Melania entered it on Tuesday, just prior to his speech at the General Assembly.
Videos from the scene reveal that Melania stumbled as the escalator failed. Trump later expressed online, “It’s astonishing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps. It was due to our grip on the handrail; otherwise, it could have been disastrous.”

Trump labeled the incident “definitely sabotage,” referencing a report from the Times of London that claimed UN employees were heard joking about disabling the escalator to force Trump to walk to the hall for his address.
Another British lip reader, Nicola Hickling, concurs that Trump appeared to be protective of Melania during the moment captured on the helicopter.
At one point during the helicopter ride, Trump reportedly told Melania, “I can’t forgive them; they attempted to harm you,” while she responded, “We can’t do this; we need to stay safe; you’re not safe.”
According to Hickling, the president then stated, “They’re finished. We must put up a fight against them.”
