President Trump Calls for Release of Tina Peters, Former Mesa County Clerk
Former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, currently serving a nine-year sentence for a voting data scheme related to the 2020 presidential election, has received support from former President Donald Trump. Trump labeled Peters as a “political prisoner” and “hostage” in a recent post on Truth Social, accusing the prosecution as “communist persecution by the radical left Democrats.”
Peters was convicted of unauthorized access to state voting machines and providing a security badge to an individual linked to MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, who attempted to access Mesa County’s election system in search of voter fraud. Despite being prosecuted by a Republican district attorney and convicted by a jury in a majority-Republican county, Trump has ordered the U.S. Department of Justice to review Peters’ case and secure her release.
Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein has denied any political motivation behind Peters’ prosecution, emphasizing the jury’s decision. The Department of Justice is now involved in the case, with Trump’s intervention adding a new dimension to the ongoing legal battle.
