President Trump called for the firing of US Attorney Erik Siebert, who is considering mortgage fraud charges against New York Attorney General Leticia James. Trump expressed his desire to remove Siebert during a press briefing in the Oval Office on Friday.
Although Siebert was nominated for the position in the Eastern District of Virginia by Trump in May, he has not yet been confirmed by the Senate. Trump stated that he changed his opinion on Siebert after learning that Democratic Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner had endorsed him.
Trump mentioned that the approval of Siebert by Senators Kaine and Warner led him to believe that Siebert may not be suitable for the role. As a result, he demanded that Siebert be removed from consideration.
Furthermore, there are reports of Trump administration allies advocating for charges against Leticia James for alleged mortgage fraud. Justice Department pardon attorney Ed Martin is scheduled to meet with Siebert to discuss the case on Monday, as per sources cited by The Post.
