Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos Meets with Donald Trump, Discusses Content and Strategy

Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, recently had a meeting with then-President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. However, Sarandos clarified that their conversation did not revolve around business matters.

During a discussion at the Paley Media Council event in New York City, Sarandos mentioned that it was the first time he had met Trump and that they enjoyed a long dinner together. When asked if Trump attempted to promote a documentary featuring Melania Trump, which was acquired by Amazon, Sarandos confirmed that Trump did not pitch the documentary. He did mention that Trump shared that Melania and their son Barron were fans of Netflix.

Regarding Amazon’s reported $40 million acquisition of the Melania documentary, Sarandos admitted that he had not seen it and therefore could not comment on whether Amazon had overpaid for the project.

When questioned about Jennifer Salke’s departure from Amazon MGM Studios, Sarandos stated that he doesn’t pay much attention to competitors like Amazon, as he is focused on Netflix’s operations. He emphasized the importance of not getting distracted by rival companies and instead concentrating on delivering quality content to Netflix subscribers.

Despite the potential shift in content strategy with Trump’s second term, Sarandos mentioned that Netflix would continue to program as usual. He discussed the decision-making process behind acquiring projects, emphasizing the balance between cost and audience appeal.

Sarandos also addressed the controversy surrounding comedian Dave Chappelle’s stand-up special “The Closer” and defended Netflix’s commitment to free speech and expression. He compared Chappelle to legendary comedians like Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, and Richard Pryor, praising his talent and influence in the comedy industry.

Furthermore, Sarandos highlighted the importance of providing comedians with a platform to experiment and engage with audiences. He emphasized that comedy is subjective and audience reactions play a significant role in determining a joke’s success.

As Netflix celebrates its 25th anniversary, Sarandos reflected on the company’s evolution from DVD rentals to streaming services. He acknowledged past decisions and expressed optimism for Netflix’s future growth and innovation.

In conclusion, Netflix’s recent success in gaining new subscribers and increasing revenue demonstrates its strong position in the streaming industry. With Sarandos at the helm, Netflix continues to disrupt the entertainment landscape and deliver compelling content to a global audience.
