It seems that every road leads back to Russia.

Signalgate continues to be a lingering scandal that the White House has desperately tried to bury, yet it keeps resurfacing alongside pressing national security concerns.

Initially, one might assume that Michael Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser, is set to take the fall for this debacle, given his role in organizing the infamous Signal chat that accidentally included an Atlantic journalist. However, a deeper dive into a New York Times article reveals a fascinating detail:

Mr. Waltz, a conventional Republican hawk who never aligned publicly with Mr. Trump’s foreign policy stance like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has been advocating for stringent sanctions against Russia should it refuse to agree to a cease-fire in Ukraine. He made this proposition as recently as Monday during a meeting with the president and senior members of his national security team.

Thus far, Mr. Trump has been hesitant to implement anything beyond symbolic measures against Russia, occasionally threatening on social media to impose sanctions and tariffs.

Waltz appears to have misinterpreted Trump’s “America First” mantra as a commitment to prioritize American interests.

One cannot help but notice that during Trump’s second term, the interests of Russia seem to have taken precedence over those of the United States.

For clarification, Pete Hegseth, who not only leaked war plans to the Atlantic journalist but also shared them with his wife and brother, remains securely in his position. In contrast, the individual advocating for sanctions against Russia is now out of a job.

While Waltz certainly deserves to face consequences for his role in Signalgate, Hegseth and all others involved in the leak should not escape scrutiny either.

Whoever Trump chooses to replace Waltz is unlikely to change much, as this administration lacks a coherent national security strategy, and any successor will probably shy away from imposing sanctions on Russia.
