President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) have reportedly been in regular contact since their friendly Oval Office meeting in November. According to Axios, the two exchanged phone numbers during their sit-down and have been texting each other since. The exact content and frequency of the messages remain unclear.
Their communication marks a significant shift from their previous rhetoric, with Trump previously calling Mamdani a “communist” and Mamdani likening the president to a fascist. However, relations may have soured recently after Mamdani criticized the U.S.-led military operation to seize Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
During a recent interview with The New York Times, Trump was asked about his relationship with the mayor, to which he responded, “Well, I did, but he hit me sooner than I thought. I thought it would take him at least a month. I mean, he hit me on Venezuela.” Mamdani defended his actions, stating that he was just being honest.
