President Donald Trump defended special envoy Steve Witkoff despite bipartisan concerns over his leaked call with Russia regarding negotiations with Ukraine. Trump stated that negotiating deals is a normal part of the process and dismissed criticisms of Witkoff’s role.

The scrutiny surrounding Witkoff intensified following a Bloomberg report on his call with a Russian official, where he seemed to advise on how to approach Trump. This raised questions about the administration’s stance towards Russia, especially considering a controversial 28-point peace plan with Ukraine.

In the leaked transcript, Witkoff coached the Russians on flattering Trump and arranging a call between him and Putin. The authenticity of the transcript has not been disputed by the Kremlin or the White House.

Republican lawmakers have criticized Witkoff for being too favorable to Russia, with Rep. Don Bacon calling for his removal. Democrats have also condemned Witkoff’s actions, with Rep. Gregory Meeks suggesting that he and the president are too cozy with Russia.

Despite the backlash, Trump, a close associate of Witkoff, downplayed the situation, calling it a standard negotiation tactic. The ongoing controversy highlights the delicate balance of diplomatic relations and the implications of behind-the-scenes negotiations.
