For aficionados of professional wrestling, WWE’s SummerSlam stands as one of the marquee events in the calendar year, akin to a sun-soaked edition of WrestleMania. It unfolds over a weekend in a massive NFL stadium, attracting fans from all corners.
Interestingly, WWE’s corporate overlords also have a stake in the UFC, and both brands are peppered with loyalists of former President Donald Trump. Trump shares a notable friendship with Vince McMahon, the former WWE owner with a rather dubious reputation, whose spouse, Linda, holds the title of Secretary of Education.
Given Trump’s long-standing ties to the wrestling world, it was telling to see the current WWE chief, Paul Levesque, appear alongside Trump as he announced the revival of the presidential fitness test. The response from the audience was telling, to say the least.

As Trump’s visage flashed on screen, a chorus of boos erupted from the crowd—an unfiltered, visceral reaction. It’s worth noting that wrestling audiences tend to lean left, which adds a layer of irony considering the ownership of the dominant entity in this entertainment sector is closely aligned with Trump.
This incident raises a broader concern: if Trump can be met with boos at a WWE event—an organization that has enshrined him in their Hall of Fame—one must ponder how many venues will continue to welcome his presence. Outside of his own properties and certain staunchly Republican enclaves, it appears that Trump’s welcome is wearing thin.
The quickness with which he has become a target for derision speaks volumes about his presidency’s perceived failures. The mere act of being present at a WWE event now elicits hostility, juxtaposing the past when he was revered within that same arena.
Moreover, WWE fans once famously booed the late Hulk Hogan at a Netflix debut event months before his passing. Trump’s legacy, it seems, is increasingly characterized by a growing disdain that spans the country, and the recent booing at SummerSlam might just be a cultural indicator of the political currents shifting ahead of the midterm elections. The waters appear to be getting choppier for Trump and the GOP.
