Steve Bannon, the controversial figure who was once Donald Trump’s chief strategist, has made Butterworth’s his go-to spot in Washington, DC. This French-style bistro, owned in part by British alt-right journalist Raheem Kassam, has become a favorite among the Maga crowd, including Republican senators, influencers, and members of the Trump administration.

Despite its proximity to Capitol Hill, Butterworth’s exudes a quirky charm that sets it apart from the glitz and glamour of Mar-a-Lago. The decor, with tasselled lampshades, faux-faded wallpaper, and a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, creates a cozy atmosphere that attracts a diverse clientele. One corner table, known as “Bannon’s nook,” is a regular haunt for the former White House strategist.

During a recent lunch at Butterworth’s, Bannon, dressed in his signature all-black attire, discussed a range of topics, including his views on Trump’s recent strikes on Iran’s enrichment sites. Bannon revealed that he had tried to dissuade Trump from ordering the strikes, fearing they would drag the US into another Middle East conflict. Despite his efforts, Trump went ahead with the strikes, which Bannon now sees as a victory against the “neocons” and the “Israel First crowd.”

Bannon, a vocal critic of US military intervention in the Middle East, believes that Trump’s actions in Iran were a strategic move to thwart Israel’s agenda of regime change. He argues that Israel had misled Trump with exaggerated intelligence about Iran’s nuclear program, leading to the strikes on Iranian officials who were actually open to negotiation.

As we enjoyed our meal of beef-tallowed french fries and duck hash, Bannon expounded on his theory that China, not Iran, poses the real threat to America. He emphasized the need for the US to focus on countering China’s influence and economic power, rather than getting entangled in conflicts in the Middle East.

See also  Eliminating Waste, Fraud, and Abuse in Medicaid My Administration has been relentlessly committed to rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in Government programs to preserve and protect them for those who rely most on them. The Medicaid program was designed to be a program to compassionately provide taxpayer dollars to healthcare providers who offer care to the most vulnerable Americans. To keep payments reasonable, billable costs for such care were historically capped at the same level that healthcare providers could receive from Medicare. The State and Federal Governments jointly shared this cost burden to ensure those of lesser means did not go untreated. Under the Biden Administration, States and healthcare providers were permitted to game the system. For example, States "taxed" healthcare providers, but sent the same money back to them in the form of a "Medicaid payment," which automatically unlocked for healthcare providers an additional "burden-sharing" payment from the Federal Government. Through this gimmick, the State could avoid contributing money toward Medicaid services, meaning the State no longer had a reason to be prudent in the amount of reimbursement provided. Instead of paying Medicare rates, many States that utilize these arrangements now pay the same healthcare providers almost three times the Medicare amount, a practice encouraged by the Biden Administration. These State Directed Payments have rapidly accelerated, quadrupling in magnitude over the last 4 years and reaching $110 billion in 2024 alone. This trajectory threatens the Federal Treasury and Medicaid's long-term stability, and the imbalance between Medicaid and Medicare patients threatens to jeopardize access to care for our seniors. I pledged to protect and improve these important Government healthcare programs for those that rely on them. Seniors on Medicare and Medicaid recipients both deserve access to quality care in a system free from the fraud, waste, and abuse, that enriches the unscrupulous and jeopardizes the programs themselves. We will take action to continue to love and cherish the Medicare and Medicaid programs to ensure they are preserved for those who need them most. The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall therefore take appropriate action to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicaid, including by ensuring Medicaid payments rates are not higher than Medicare, to the extent permitted by applicable law. This memorandum is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person. DONALD J. TRUMP

Despite his controversial views and tumultuous past, Bannon remains a prominent figure in US politics, with a loyal following among the Maga crowd. His presence at Butterworth’s is a testament to his influence and the ongoing debates surrounding US foreign policy and national security.

As we wrapped up our lunch, Bannon’s phone continued to ring off the hook, a reminder of his busy schedule and influential connections. As we parted ways, it was clear that Bannon’s impact on American politics, for better or worse, is far from over. And Butterworth’s, with its eclectic charm and diverse clientele, remains a fitting backdrop for these ongoing debates and discussions. In a recent interview, Steve Bannon delves into the Edwardian perspective on geopolitics, highlighting the notion of the “world island” where dominance over Eurasia equates to global control. He asserts that the current focal point of global power dynamics lies in the Pacific region, dismissing any potential Middle East conflict as a mere distraction orchestrated by media entities like Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News.

When pressed about the rationale behind bombing Iran as a supposed pivot to the Pacific, Bannon shifts the conversation to the elimination of Iranian negotiators by Israeli airstrikes, which he claims disrupted ongoing talks. He downplays the significance of potential regime change in Iran, attributing it to manipulative tactics from Murdoch and Israeli officials aimed at swaying Trump towards a more aggressive stance.

Despite doubts about Trump’s commitment to ending hostilities with Iran, Bannon remains steadfast in his belief that the war is over. As they continue their discussion over lunch, Bannon’s choice to indulge in red meat after feeling anaemic serves as a metaphor for his recent return to a more aggressive stance on political matters.

Transitioning to a different topic, Bannon reflects on Zohran Mamdani’s surprising victory over Andrew Cuomo in the New York mayoral race, viewing it as a seismic shift in Democratic politics akin to Trump’s upset victory over Kamala Harris. He attributes Mamdani’s success to his authentic approach and grassroots campaigning, declaring the traditional Democratic party as obsolete in the face of emerging populism.

When questioned about the impact of his time spent with criminals on his populist ideology, Bannon recounts his experience in prison and the insights gained from teaching civics to fellow inmates. He emphasizes the disillusionment among Hispanic and African-American inmates towards the Democratic party, citing their perception of it being controlled by elitist factions with superficial concern for marginalized communities.

Overall, Bannon’s reflections offer a glimpse into his evolving perspective on politics and society, shaped by his experiences and interactions within the tumultuous landscape of contemporary geopolitics. At 70 years old, none deserved to be locked up, but unfortunately, that was the reality for many individuals. The experience of being incarcerated is not only disorienting but also dangerous. Steel doors, controlled movements, and the constant threat of violence create an environment that is far from conducive to rehabilitation.

Steve Bannon, a former inmate who has since been released, has teamed up with Jared Kushner and Peter Navarro to advocate for sentencing and prison reform. Bannon credits his time behind bars as a significant influence on his perspective. His belief that America’s liberal elites and Wall Street benefit from immigration due to wage competition has sparked controversy and debate.

While Bannon’s views on immigration and the economy may resonate with some, his proposed solutions, such as suspending habeas corpus, are met with skepticism. The idea that trashing America’s due process rights would somehow fix economic issues seems misguided at best. Additionally, Bannon’s promotion of conspiracy theories, such as the “stolen election” narrative, further calls into question the validity of his arguments.

As Bannon sips on a double espresso, the conversation turns to Trump’s policies and the impact on working-class Americans. Bannon’s alignment with Trump, despite their differing views on certain issues, highlights the complexities of political alliances. The discussion touches on Elon Musk, Medicaid cuts, and the possibility of Trump running for a third term in 2028.

Bannon’s unwavering support for Trump as a transformative leader in American history is met with skepticism. While he believes Trump will run and win again, the legal implications of such a scenario remain unclear. As the conversation comes to a close, Bannon reflects on his time in prison and the impact it has had on his life.

Exiting the conversation, Bannon is approached by a passerby who requests a selfie. The juxtaposition of his past as an inmate with his current status as a political figure highlights the complexities of his persona. Despite his controversial views and past actions, Bannon remains a figure who sparks curiosity and intrigue.

In conclusion, the experience of incarceration can have a profound impact on individuals, shaping their perspectives and influencing their actions. Bannon’s journey from prison to political advocacy serves as a reminder of the complexities of the criminal justice system and the need for reform. As we navigate the challenges of a changing world, it is essential to consider the perspectives of those who have experienced the system firsthand.
