In a surprising twist, Donald Trump seems increasingly anxious about the ascent of Zohran Mamdani in New York’s mayoral race. This raises a pertinent question: why is the former president so fixated on a local election while ostensibly managing the affairs of an entire nation?
According to a report from The New York Times,
Trump, despite relocating from New York City, has been privately contemplating ways to intervene in the tumultuous mayoral race, aiming to curb the momentum of Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, as revealed by eight individuals familiar with the discussions.
Recently, he has been engaging with a Republican congressman and various New York business figures, probing who among a crowded candidate field, which includes Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, stands the best chance of defeating the leftist frontrunner, Mamdani.
From an electoral standpoint, any endorsement from Trump would likely spell disaster for either Adams or Cuomo, given the current political climate. Trump’s popularity has waned significantly, and his backing could do more harm than good.
As long as the votes against Mamdani remain divided, his path to victory appears increasingly clear.
The New York Times’ portrayal of Trump’s concerns as stemming from his deep-rooted connection to New York is, to put it mildly, a stretch. It’s almost comical when you consider that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in the very city he claims to cherish, all while disparaging it during his trials. His affection for New York seems to have evaporated so thoroughly that he decided to change his residency to Florida.
The real crux of Trump’s anxiety can be traced back to a recent Gallup poll measuring the approval ratings of various newsmakers, which I discussed in my article for The Daily Politicus USA.
In this poll, the most favored politician among 14 notable figures was Senator Bernie Sanders, who has vocally endorsed Mamdani. Trump’s trepidation is not about Mamdani per se; it stems from the vibrant energy surrounding progressive figures like Sanders and Mamdani. This momentum could potentially threaten numerous Republican seats in the upcoming 2026 elections, relegating Trump to a position of diminished influence.
This situation transcends New York; it reflects a broader shift in American political sentiments, one that appears to be moving away from Trump and his party.
Should Trump attempt to meddle in this race, it could inadvertently propel Mamdani to victory.
