Donald Trump appears to recognize the shortcomings of his Iran deal. This is evidenced by his attempt to bolster a weak agreement by fabricating a story involving Barack Obama at the G7 summit.

Trump alleged that the Iranians mocked Obama.

The president stated:

He tried to bribe his way out. I didn’t do that. Nobody mentions that. 1.7 billion and hundreds of millions of dollars, they tried to bribe their way out of it. And you know what the Iranians did? They laughed at Obama and they said he’s a stupid son of a bitch.

Video:

Trump’s remark is filled with projection. Obama did not resort to bribery with Iran, as he was wise enough not to heed Netanyahu’s call for war. Obama did not hand over billions to Iran. Instead, he allowed limited and conditional access to some of Iran’s frozen assets in the U.S., which could only be used for humanitarian purposes such as food and medicine.

Conversely, Trump placed no such restrictions on his own deal with Iran, agreeing to unfreeze assets, remove all sanctions, and provide Iran with access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund.

Trump’s G7 press conference further revealed the unfavorable terms of his deal for the United States.
