Currently, approximately 160 National Guard members from West Virginia are stationed in Washington, D.C., ostensibly under the guise of addressing a “crime emergency.” Courts in various jurisdictions have scrutinized the validity of this emergency justification. Nonetheless, what stands out is that the two National Guard troops involved in this shooting would not have been present in the nation’s capital had it not been for a directive from Donald Trump, coupled with the acquiescence of the West Virginia governor.
The shooter, previously affiliated with the CIA during the Afghanistan conflict, was granted entry into the United States in 2021. Notably, it was the Trump administration that approved his asylum application earlier this year.
When pressed by reporters on how this individual was vetted and granted asylum, Trump’s response was anything but composed, illustrating a common theme: the administration’s handling of national security and immigration matters often led to chaotic outcomes.
