President Trump to Meet with Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado
President Trump recently announced that he is expecting to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado next week. During an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Trump expressed his excitement about the meeting and stated that it would be a “great honor” if Machado were to give him her Nobel Prize.
In a previous interview with The Post, Trump had expressed uncertainty about Machado’s ability to lead Venezuela following the ouster of dictator Nicolas Maduro, despite her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize win.
Since Trump’s remarks, Machado has shown a willingness to personally give her prize to the president, who has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on multiple occasions.
Regarding Machado’s potential gesture of giving her Nobel Prize to Trump, the president commented, “I’ve heard that she wants to do that. That could be a great honor.”
Machado and Edmundo González, recognized by the US as the winner of Venezuela’s last presidential election, are prepared to lead a transitional government in the country.
In a recent interview with Hannity, Machado mentioned that she hasn’t spoken to Trump since winning the award and dedicated it to the president last October. She also expressed her intentions to return to Venezuela as soon as possible.
