Armenia and Azerbaijan are on the brink of signing a groundbreaking deal at the White House, marking a significant step towards peace and prosperity in the region. The agreement will see the establishment of the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity”, a transit corridor connecting Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan through southern Armenia.
The project, which is set to include a rail line, oil and gas pipelines, and fiber optic lines, aims to promote trade, transit, and energy flows in the South Caucasus region. The corridor will be operated by a private company, with negotiations on the operator scheduled to begin soon.
The deal, reminiscent of the minerals agreement struck with Ukraine, is not just a commercial venture but a strategic move to maintain peace and stability in the region. It also opens up the possibility of Turkey reopening its border with Armenia, boosting trade links with central Asia and China.
The agreement comes after years of conflict between the two nations, with a major breakthrough occurring in 2023 when Azerbaijan, supported by Turkey, gained control over Nagorno-Karabakh. The establishment of the Trump Route signifies a new era of cooperation and connectivity in the region.
The US’s increased involvement in the region highlights Russia’s diminishing influence, as Moscow’s role in Armenia and Azerbaijan has waned since the 2020 conflict. The deal is seen as a game-changer for the region, creating economic opportunities and paving the way for a historic peace agreement.
While the road to a comprehensive peace deal is still long, the Trump administration’s efforts to broker peace in the South Caucasus are commendable. The deal also includes a request to dissolve the Minsk Group, a body set up by the OSCE to address the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, signaling a shift towards normalcy and stability in the region.
As the region moves towards peace and prosperity, the establishment of the Trump Route symbolizes a new chapter in diplomatic relations and economic development in the South Caucasus. The US’s commitment to the region underscores its role as a key player in promoting peace and prosperity in the region.
