WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday that allowing Ukraine and Russia to “fight for a while” before intervening might be a strategy for achieving peace, despite Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz urging Trump to use his influence to stop the bloodshed.

During their meeting, Trump likened the conflict in Ukraine to a children’s fight, stating that sometimes it’s best to let them resolve it themselves before intervening. Merz, however, emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need for strong action against Putin.

Trump’s comments diverged from his usual stance on Ukraine, but he also condemned the violence while floating the idea of continuing the conflict for a period. Merz, on the other hand, stressed the importance of Trump’s role in ending the war.

The meeting between Trump and Merz marked their first face-to-face encounter, with Merz successfully avoiding any contentious moments in the public eye. They exchanged pleasantries and gifts, with Merz inviting Trump to visit Germany.

Merz, who has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts regarding Ukraine, emphasized the need for a ceasefire and increased pressure on Russia. Trump, meanwhile, kept the option of sanctions on the table for both sides.

Merz emphasizes Ukraine support

Merz, a conservative leader with a business background, has been vocal in his support for Ukraine and condemnation of Russian aggression. He has called for more sanctions and a unified international response to the conflict.

Trump and Merz also discussed defense spending, with Trump urging Germany to increase its military budget. Merz highlighted Germany’s efforts to modernize its armed forces and meet NATO spending targets.

Tariff trouble

Another key topic of discussion was trade, with Trump expressing concerns about trade imbalances and tariffs. Merz emphasized the importance of trade relations and the need for mutually beneficial agreements.

Overall, the meeting between Trump and Merz highlighted the complex dynamics of international diplomacy and the challenges of addressing conflicts like the one in Ukraine. Both leaders expressed a commitment to finding a peaceful resolution while navigating the complexities of global politics.
