Former President Donald Trump made headlines during a rally in Erie, Pa., where he discussed the rampant issue of retail theft plaguing the country. Trump expressed frustration with the current state of law enforcement, suggesting that police officers should be allowed to be “extraordinarily rough” in order to tackle the problem effectively.

Pointing to viral videos of brazen thefts in retail stores, Trump blamed the “liberal left” for hindering law enforcement’s ability to respond to criminals. He even floated the idea of appointing someone like Rep. Mike Kelly to take charge of law enforcement for a period of time, emphasizing the need for a tough approach to combat crime.

During his speech, Trump proposed the idea of having “one real rough, nasty day” of policing to send a strong message to criminals. He suggested that a show of force could deter criminal activity and bring an immediate end to the looting and theft taking place.

This is not the first time Trump has advocated for tough measures to address crime. He has previously supported ideas such as the death penalty for drug dealers and child molesters, as well as the reinstatement of stop-and-frisk policing methods.

While some may view Trump’s remarks as controversial, his team clarified that he was not announcing a new policy but rather expressing his desire to empower law enforcement to take more decisive action. Trump emphasized that both police officers and Border Patrol agents want to take a strong stance against crime but are hindered by restrictions imposed by the liberal left.

Despite his tough stance on crime, Trump has also shown a willingness for leniency in certain cases. He signed the bipartisan First Step Act criminal justice reform package into law and has utilized his clemency and pardon power in the past. However, he has also criticized the power of prosecutors, particularly in light of the criminal charges brought against him.

Overall, Trump’s remarks at the rally shed light on his views on crime and law enforcement, highlighting the need for a strong and decisive approach to tackle the issue of retail theft and criminal activity in the country.
