When it comes to Donald Trump, the political landscape is forever painted in stark partisan colors. Even in moments demanding national unity, such as choosing to bomb Iran, Trump’s myopic view of partisanship prevails, resulting in complications for his party. This blind spot has now led to an entirely new challenge within Republican ranks.

CNN reported:

Reports indicate that certain Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, were privy to advance notice of the military strikes on Iran, while their Democratic counterparts on the intelligence committees were left out of the loop.

This selectivity in communication seems particularly striking, given that all members of the so-called Gang of Eight—typically briefed prior to major military actions—were not treated equally this time around.

By excluding top Democrats from the briefing and failing to solicit their input, Trump has transformed a critical military decision into a partisan affair. This decision appears less motivated by a desire for national security or global stability, and more by a quest for personal and political advantage.

If Iran responds to the strikes, which might involve repercussions throughout the Middle East and a potential impact on oil markets, the blame will likely fall squarely on the shoulders of the Republican Party. Trump’s failure to engage Democrats could have mitigated some of the divisiveness surrounding this military escalation, but instead, he opted for a partisan approach—now he and his party must bear the consequences.

It is worth noting that Iran has yet to show any indication that a single bombing strike will compel them to capitulate. Regardless of how this conflict unfolds, Trump’s decision will be his to own, and, by extension, so will the Republican Party, which has notably failed to assert itself against his unilateral tendencies.

What are your thoughts on Trump’s decision to sideline Democrats in this critical briefing? We invite you to share your opinions in the comments below.
