WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump of the United States and Chinese leader Xi Jinping engaged in discussions on Thursday amidst ongoing tariff negotiations that have disrupted global trade.
The conversation was reported by Xinhua, a Chinese state media outlet. The White House refrained from immediate commentary.
Just a day earlier, Trump expressed challenges in reaching an agreement with Xi.
“I have always respected President Xi of China, but negotiating with him has proven to be incredibly tough and challenging!!!,” Trump shared on social media platform on Wednesday.
Trade talks between the U.S. and China hit a standstill following a May 12 pact to lower tariff rates while discussions unfolded. The impasse reflects the ongoing competition for economic supremacy.
