President Trump has made the decision to withdraw the United States from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) due to its perceived anti-America and anti-Israel stance, as well as its alignment with woke agendas. The decision comes after a 90-day review initiated by Trump earlier this year, focusing on investigating any anti-Semitism or anti-Israel sentiment within the organization.
Administration officials found fault with UNESCO’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies, as well as its perceived bias towards Palestine and China. White House deputy spokesperson Anna Kelly emphasized that Trump’s decision is in line with his “America First” policy and ensuring that international organization memberships align with national interests.
Among the issues cited were UNESCO’s publication of an “anti-racism toolkit” and the “Transforming MEN’talities” initiative, which aimed to reshape harmful gender norms. The organization’s focus on promoting gender equality through initiatives like video game reports was also highlighted.
Additionally, UNESCO’s actions regarding Israel, including designating Jewish holy sites as “Palestinian World Heritage” sites, and its language around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were criticized. The organization’s close ties to China, with Chinese nationals in key leadership positions, were also mentioned as a cause for concern.
This move marks the second time the US has withdrawn from UNESCO, with Trump previously making the decision in 2017. Former President Joe Biden later rejoined the organization in 2023, citing the need for American presence to counter China’s influence. The Biden administration also committed to repaying over $600 million in dues owed since the US stopped contributing in 2011.
The decision to withdraw from UNESCO reflects ongoing tensions between the US and international organizations over issues of national interest and alignment with American values.
