The President’s Desire for a New Washington Commanders Stadium Named After Himself
The commander in chief has expressed interest in having the new Washington Commanders’ stadium, located outside of Washington, DC, bear the Trump name.
The White House has acknowledged reports that it is considering naming the stadium after President Trump as the team proceeds with plans to construct the stadium on the site of the old Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Southeast, DC.
“That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” stated White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to The Post.
The White House did not provide further details on whether the naming was a requirement for ongoing support, but sources suggest that it is likely to happen as per the president’s wishes.
President Trump is scheduled to attend the Commanders’ home game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday after spending the early part of the weekend at Mar-a-Lago.
He will participate in a special Veterans’ Day event at halftime and will watch the game from owner Josh Harris’ luxury box.
Pro stadium naming rights can fetch millions of dollars annually, with previous deals such as the one with Northwest Federal Credit Union amounting to $7.5 million per year for an eight-year naming agreement.
In July, Trump had threatened to halt the stadium deal unless the team reverted to its original name, the “Washington Redskins,” and abandoned the “Washington Commanders” name.
Like many projects in DC, the naming process would involve various bureaucracies, including the National Park Service and D.C.’s city council, due to the location of the stadium on federal land transferred to the city under a long-term lease.
The DC City Council has already approved plans for the $3.7 billion, 65,000-seat domed stadium, which is expected to be completed by 2030 as part of a significant commercial development.
Trump, known for putting his name on buildings, has been involved in various construction projects, including a new White House ballroom and the recently sold Trump International Hotel in the city.
